Lunar Calendar
There is an ancient lunar calendar between Gudara and Karakul in the Bartang Valley that lies high amongst the mountains at 3900 meters. Although there is not much info as to when this was created, it does show that the surrounding areas have not changed much over the centuries.
Communities in the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan are amongst those most vulnerable to climate change due to their geographic location and subsistence-based livelihoods. Lunar and ecological calendars historically supported their agropastoral lifestyles and provided pro-active capabilities to seasonal changes until decades of Soviet occupation resulted in the knowledge and use of the calendars to fall away. In 2016, the villages of Savnob and Roshorv in the isolated Bartang Valley began a system of renewal and restoration, to combat both their vulnerability to climate change and increase their food security.
It is pretty isolated and getting there is quite a journey.
