Sanatorium Imereti
Architects Vladimir Alexi-Meskhishvili and L. Janelidze completed the construction of Sanatorium Imereti in 1961. The Georgian city of Tskaltubo had emerged as a significant spa-resort within the Soviet Union, resulting in the development of 23 large holiday hotels, sanatoriums, and accompanying bath houses in the area during this period.
The construction of Sanatorium Imereti took 11 years and resulted in a facility with a capacity of 305 beds. The structure is a perfect example of Stalinist architecture and features a large round room that served as a concert hall. The sanatorium was also surrounded by a meticulously landscaped garden containing pines & palm trees.
Sadly, the once distinguished Sanatorium Imereti is experiencing rapid deterioration after having been abandoned when the Soviet Union collapsed. The sanatorium accommodated refugee families for a number of years but most of them have now been rehoused. The balconies, verandas, openings, and windows are in a state of severe disrepair, and some wings have already collapsed.
Rumour has it that the sanatorium was recently bought on auction and will be renovated within the next few years.
