Kapica

Chief Kapika is the absolute head of the Himba people, a nomadic tribe in Namibia and is the chief of the Epupa constituency, which is home to three Himba chiefs.

He is recognized by most other chiefs, but not all.

Chief Kapika has been the traditional leader of his community since his father and half-brother died in 1982 but was not officially recognized until 2016. In 2013 he successfully led a protest in 2013 against the treatment of Himba people by Wild Things, a German TV series that mocked the local people.

He also kept his sister chained to a bed for over 20 years to stop her wandering off due to her dementia after a witchdoctor informed him that he would follow within 3 days of her death. Rescued from her torment a few years ago by a nearby lodge owner and the head of Alzheimer’s Dementia Namibia, Ndjinna now lives in a care home outside Swakopmund.
