Hotel Medea

‘Hotel Medea’ is an abandoned hotel and sanatorium in Tskaltubo, west-central Georgia. Built in 1954 and left empty after the Soviet Union’s collapse, it was initially named ‘Sanatorium Tsekavshiri’.

With its numerous columns and blue archways, Hotel Medea showcased impressive Stalinist architecture. Construction began in 1954 and finished in 1962, from a design by A. Intskirveli and T. Potskhishvili.  Once complete, the hotel had a capacity of 326 beds.

After the Soviet Union fell, Tskaltubo, which mainly hosted Russian visitors, became deserted. The hotels and sanatoria were abandoned until 1992 when war in Abkhazia forced around 200 thousand ethnic Georgians to flee. Approximately 9 thousand refugees found temporary shelter in Tskaltubo’s empty buildings.

Even after twenty-five years, some families still live there.

It would make a fantastic loaction.
