Dead Vlei
Sossusvlei & Dead Vlei lie within the Namib Naukluft Park, in the middle of the Namib Desert.
Having long been cut off from the Tsauchab River by a large sand dune, Dead Vlei is characterised by numerous dead trees which are unable to decay due to the extreme dryness of the region. One of Namibia’s most photographed areas, Dead Vlei has also set the scene for a number of fashion shoots, commercials and movies over the years and is a favourite location for many international film companies visiting Namibia. The area and access hours are highly regulated so getting a permit is not always easy but the end visuals will justify the process required for permission to film there – leave your drone at home and be prepared for a bit if a walk in soft sand.
And, for both the brave and the fit, there is always Big Daddy Dune lying alongside the Vlei that will require a rather strenuous climb up to an incredible view.
