Big Shiraki
An amazing location that we recently scouted for an upcoming project.
Around 1950, the Soviet government constructed a military airbase known as Greater Shiraki in Georgia – it was home to the 178th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, which took part in the long-running Soviet–Afghan War. Now long abandoned and gently decaying, most of the hangers are sealed shut although the metal struts and supports are slowly being stripped away by scrap metal dealers. One lonely, very trashed fighter plane remains, along with a defaced statue outside what would have been the command post and the remnants of the runway stretching out into the surrounding fields.
