Abano Pass

Tusheti is a rather a wild and remote area in Georgia.  With little infrastructure, it’s a picturesque region that only a few tourists venture into – and it can only be reached for a couple of months during summer, via the Abano Pass.

Around 80 km long and located at 3000m above sea level, the Abano Pass is a difficult, fully off-road mountain road. Completely wild, with no safety measures, the roadside features many memorial plaques of those that didn’t make it up or down, often with an image of the vehicle they were driving at the time.

This is the highest drivable pass in the Caucasus and one must both ascend and descend via this route, which is only open for around 3 months of the year due to weather, snow, thick mud + rockslides.  Heavy rain in summer may also temporarily close the pass due to erosion.

Not without reason, the only road to the Tusheti region is considered to be one of the world’s most dangerous.
